Where the Flies Swarm

A collection of artwork and poems to narrate

Elliot's life as a sex trafficking survivor.

Elliot travels back to written work from years ago. He reintroduces himself to poems that he wrote while being trafficked, feeling lost, confused, and imprisoned. After carefully binding these poems back together, Elliot hopes to provide some insight to the world of what his life in human sex trafficking looked like: a life trapped in unimaginable violence, hopelessness, and dehumanization. Where the Flies Swarm is a chance to dive in and discover the realities of one survivor’s experiences when living throughout sex trafficking culture.

"This is such a powerful book and I’m so glad it was written. The strength that it took to put this together, process all of these really difficult traumas, and put them out there for the world to see and learn from is incredible."

"I learned that there must be scores of people needing to share their stories; and, worse, scores of people who will never even have the chance."

Barb

"I felt a very deep sense of loss and horror as soon as I started reading this. I can only do a little at a time. It feels like falling forever in a black nothingness."

When the ants scatter

Within the context of trauma and recovery, we all know that healing is never linear. This type of restoration requires constant death and rebirth of self, radical rest, safety, confrontation, forgiveness of self, and much more. My own journey of healing is ever-going and will continue on for a very long time. My first book, Where the Flies Swarm, provided a space for sharing deep trauma. When the Ants Scatter is a second glance on the same story, focusing on the logistics of cognitive and neurological repair after surviving years of abuse through human sex trafficking. A large portion of healing requires traveling back to remember, address, and find closure from traumatizing events. At this later point in time, I am observing these memories from a much safer viewpoint, able to dissect and reform them into moments that no longer debilitate me. Through establishing myself in a safe community, acquiring a solid support system, and investing in long-term therapy, I have been able to engage with my trauma in a healthy, relieving, and empowering way.

When the Ants Scatter is a tour through different accounts of traumatic events, and a variety of healing methods I’ve attempted along the way. Adequate healing of any kind requires enough room for safety and connection. This book is a story of finding that security, understanding past barriers to freedom, and gaining the ability to openly express needs as a survivor. When the Ants Scatter is also a reminder to anyone looking for relief: newness and joy is possible. You are worth the safety and connection it takes to recover.
